How Rotary Dryers Work?
Rotary dryers are comprised of a rotating drum,into which the material is fed,in combination with the drying air.Flights,or lifters,pick up the material from the bed,carrying it over,and dropping it through the air stream as the drum rotates to maximize heat transfer between the material and drying air.The tumbling action given by a drum offers the added benefit of polishing the pellets,further rounding them as they dry.

About Rotary Dryers
Rotary dryers are one of the most common types of industrial dryer, utilised for large quantities of material with particles of size 10 mm or larger. Typical rotary dryer consist of cylindrical shell made of steel plates slightly inclined (1O to 5O) to horizontal to assist the transportation of the wet material fed for the processing, shell is typically 0.3-5 m in diameter, 5-90 m in length and rotating at 1-5. Rotary dryer shell tube acts as body to transfer the wet feedstock and number of steam heated tubes are placed symmetrically around the perimeter and rotate with it. Wet material is fed into the upper end of dryer and the material travels through it by virtue of rotation and slope of the shell and dried product is picked as the lower end. The feed rate, speed of rotation of shell, the volume of heated air or gases, and their temperature are so regulated such that by the time material reaches to discharge point of rotary dryer it’s accurately dried.

The rotary dryer also known as tumbling dryer is an equipment employed to minimize the moisture content of feed materials by bringing it in direct contact with a heated gas. It consists of an inclined long drum or cylindrical shell often fitted with internal flights or lifters; rotated slowly upon bearings through which the material to be dried flow with a tumbling/cascading action in concurrent (for heat-sensitive materials) or counter-current flow with the heating air or gases.
The movement of the material is due to the combined effect of inclination of the shell to the horizontal and the internal tumbling action or mechanical turn over thus the name tumbling dryer. The nature of the feed determines the directions of gas flow through the cylinder and it is relative to the solid. This drying equipment can also perform batch or continuous processing of the wet feed.
